The world’s largest chipmaker, Intel Corp, has announced it is to invest $150 million in companies developing WiFi technology. Intel released a statement outlining that it believes high-speed wireless technology is an area of growth, and it sees the market as key to accelerating revenue and profit in the next decade.
Intel was cagey about which companies it would invest in, but did say the group would introduce in the first half of next year its microprocessor chip code-named Banias, the first Intel has ever designed from scratch for mobile computing. Banias will include Wi-Fi capability as part of its chipset and processor technology.
In a statement, Intel pointed to research from Tele Analytics claiming that there are 14,000 hotspots available around the world in cafes airports campuses and hotels. Hotspots are locations that have been furnished with equipment that creates a wireless network with the 802.11 technologies.
