Euronet Worldwide has launched a US-centric prepaid recharge services program, PaySpot, in partnership with Concord EFS, the largest ATM operator, which manages more than 95,300 ATMs. The PaySpot program will enable wireless subscribers to Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Cingular, Tracphone and Alltel, to purchase airtime and long-distance calling plans from ATMs and POS terminals across the US. By supporting debit and credit card-based payments for airtime at ATMs, and cash purchases at a POS terminal, PaySpot enables carriers increase their reach, while helping retailers cut inventory overheads.

Once fully implemented, the PaySpot program will enable consumers to recharge their wireless prepaid accounts at ATMs or checkout counters at affiliated convenience store and other locations across the US. Concord will offer PaySpot via its retail ATM processing subsidiary, Core Data Resources, implying that PaySpot services will be supported by four ATM makers with an installed base of over 75,000 ATMs in the US. Euronet and Concord are targeting a market of 15 million US wireless subscribers, or 10 per cent of all US subscribers, which researchers Telecom Services, predict to exceed 44 million users by 2005.

“PaySpot is a win-win program for everyone in the ATM channel”, in combining “the rapid growth of the prepaid wireless market with a new revenue-generating transaction”, said Core Data’s Campbell Burgess. The Yankee Group has meanwhile advised wireless carriers in Canada, to “adjust some of the dynamics of their existing prepaid wireless services” to “transform current offerings into offerings that drive bottom lines”. Twenty-six per cent of all wireless subscribers in Canada were prepaid at the end of Q1, 2002, but Yankee believes operators can drive prepaid subscriber usage and bolster ARPU by offering messaging and value-added prepaid services in an effort to build relationships with an ‘anonymous’ subscriber base
