National Fraud Center Releases Top 10 Identity Fraud Tips for the Holidays

In response to the largest identity fraud case in U.S. history and in preparation for holiday shopping season, the National Fraud Center released its top 10 consumer tips for preventing identity fraud.


The tips include advice such as keeping a list of all credit card account numbers, credit limits and expiration dates in a safe place so consumers can immediately report any problems with their accounts.

NATIONAL FRAUD CENTER'S TOP TEN TIPS FOR PREVENTING IDENTITY FRAUD DURING THE HOLIDAYS

* Never leave your card, receipts or carbons behind after a transaction and be sure to shred receipts or tear them into small pieces when disposing them
* At an ATM be sure to shield others from being able to watch your data entries so they do not learn your PIN
* Be very wary of requests for you to disclose your Social Security Number to anyone as part of making a purchase transaction -- in person where it may be written down or especially over the phone
* Never carry your PIN in your wallet or write it on the back of your card
* Limit the number of credit cards you carry with you
* Never give your account numbers to anyone calling you on the phone regardless of their reason for requesting it
* Keep a list of all account numbers, credit limits and expiration dates as well as the corresponding customer service phone numbers and addresses. Place the list in a safe place so you can immediately report a problem with your account or if your credit card is lost or stolen
* Never use your birth date, telephone number or other obvious number for your PIN
* Do not place any bill payments in your mailbox for pickup. Someone other than a postal employee may take it and then have valuable information about you
* Never allow anyone to put your store account number on a check used to make a purchase
