Launch: what launch?

Media reports circulated on Monday claiming the greatly-anticipated launch of Hutchison's "3" third-generation mobile service in the U.K., but the company said Monday was not launch day.
The UK arm of Hutchison 3 had selected the date of 03-03-03 for the official commercial launch of the service.

A spokesperson for the company stated that the party held last night for partners and suppliers was "not a launch party".

Despite ‘3’ shops featuring over the top advertising, plugging the products, consumers will have to wait several weeks before the 3G enabled handsets are made available.

According to the spokesman, the key new development is that handsets for the service can now be pre-ordered at third-party retailers, such as Carphone Warehouse, Link, Dixons and Phones4U, as well as at Hutchison's own flagship stores in London and Birmingham.

More than 65,000 British consumers have already signed up for "third-generation" mobile phones as the much-heralded new technology went on sale in the high street yesterday.

The UMTS operator finally opened its network for business with a live video phone call between Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt and e-Commerce Minister Stephen Timms. The launch of the service was initially marked for September last year, and the operator has suffered many problems in getting the fledgling service up and running.

High street retailers Dixons, Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and The Link will start taking in-store pre-orders for the 3G service from today.

3 is offering a range of video phone capabilities and a strong array of multimedia content partners - including the BBC, ITN, the Premiership and Reuters.
