Virgin Mobile, the joint venture between Virgin Group and T-Mobile, has reported a profit of £4.8m in 2002 on turnover of £288m, up 57 per cent on 2001.

More than 253,200 new customers have joined its network so far this year.

As at March 31, the total number of Virgin Mobile customers in the U.K. stood at 2,637,112.

The company's turnover during the first three months of 2003 exceeded GBP1 million a day, with total revenues in 2003 expected to top GBP400 million. This is an increase on 2002's turnover of GBP288 million. The average revenue per user for Virgin Mobile customers stands at GBP136, one of the highest prepay ARPUs in the industry.

Virgin Mobile is a major contributor to its network partner T-Mobile's U.K. customer base. It now accounts for more than 20% of its total network base, and contributes 25% of SMS traffic on the network, which is a reflection of how appealing the Virgin Mobile brand is to Britain's youth.

Virgin Mobile is the U.K.'s fifth network. It is a 50:50 joint venture company between Richard Branson's Virgin Group and Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile, and is the U.K.'s first mobile virtual operator.
