Returns on U.S. equity funds have been nice, but if you want to really turn up the heat, visit Mexico or Brazil.

In terms of international funds, Brown is putting her money into Matthews Asian Growth and Income ( MACSX) , but she points out that more speculative investors may wish to check out two of the top performers in her aggressive categories: Brazil iShares (EWZ), up a blistering 33% this year, and Mexico iShares (EWW), up 22% in the last two months. Since both funds are country-specific, Brown advises that a decent way to spread the risk and capture returns may be to buy T. Rowe Price Latin America ( PRLAX) , despite the 2% redemption fee for holding it less than a year.

"Every sector and market area has its day, and internationals may be overdue," observes Brown. She points out that the last time international funds outperformed domestic funds was between March 1999 and March 2000, when, on average, they tripled the 14% return of the S&P 500. Before that, internationals returned six times the S&P's 8% gain between February 1993 and August 1994.
