VeriFone terminals are being installed at pilot retail sites in Switzerland as part of ep2, the joint project by acquirers to implement the EMV payment standard Swiss-wide.

VeriFone International Partner (VIP) CCV-CardPay has successfully deployed its first VeriFone Omni 3740 terminals and SC 5000 programmable smart card PINpads at leading retailers in Zurich, where the ep2 pilot is taking place. VeriFone is only the second terminal supplier to have its solutions integrated in the ep2 pilot phase, marking a major step into the Swiss market for the company.

CCV developed the software for the terminals, which will be deployed throughout world-renowned brand outlets in the city, including restaurants Down Mexico Way and Churrasco Steakhouse, and the Central Plaza Hotel.

With more debit cards than credit cards in use in the Swiss market, one of the major requirements of the ep2 project is the ability to process all cards currently available, including specific customer cards such as the Migros' M-Card. The ep2 system supports the full functionality of EMV, including offline authorisation of transactions. A major result of the ep2 pilot is the proof of much faster transaction processing times at the point of sale for offline transactions, a key benefit for retailers. CCV-CardPay selected the combination of the Omni 3740 and the SC 5000 for PIN-authorised transactions as the optimal solution for the pilot, and the wider payment market in Switzerland.

All the Swiss acquirers have now completed their EMV/ep2 implementation on the host side. The current commercial pilot is the first step in the nationwide roll-out targeted for completion to meet the EMV deadline at the end of 2004.

VeriFone's Omni 3740 terminal packs performance, convenience, and an exceptional range of payment capabilities into an affordable, ergonomic device. The compact, all-in-one design combines a mag-stripe reader and quiet, fast thermal printer. The Omni 3740 runs VeriFone's Verix multi-application architecture, offering support for value-added applications like pre-paid phone cards, loyalty programs, gift cards and age verification.

The SC 5000 provides an easy migration path to upgrade installed terminals or electronic cash registers to support global smart card solutions based on EMV specifications. The SC 5000 is protected by a broad range of software-based security features and adheres to international encryption standards (e.g. Triple DES) being adopted by the payment industry to raise the level of fraud protection for PIN-based debit transactions.
