RealNetworks Inc., battling Microsoft Corp. in the market for multimedia software, has announced that Vodafone has signed on to use its software to deliver video and audio clips to high-end handsets.

"The relationship between RealNetworks and Vodafone is a major step forward in making mobile media a mainstream reality," said Rob Glaser, Chairman and CEO, RealNetworks, Inc. "We are very excited about working with Vodafone to enable content providers to offer content to consumers, and for consumers to access the media they want, when and where they want it."
Vodafone, which controls operations in 16 countries, said it plans to use RealNetworks' server software to deliver video and audio clips to users of its Vodafone Live! suite of multimedia services. A spokesman said the operator will also ask handset suppliers to include RealNetworks' phone software on their products.

Aside from Microsoft of Redmond, Wash., RealNetworks is also competing with PacketVideo Corp. of San Diego and other specialist software companies.
