Schlumberger has successfully implemented the Accreditation (ACR) system for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. ACR is a key component of the Games Management System (GMS), a very large and complete suite of tools that brings clarity to the complex logistics needs of the 200,000 Olympic Family members who are expected to attend next year's Olympic Games.
Combining a physical ID badge and scanning system with back-office database applications linked to the Games IT network, the ACR manages registration processes to ensure that only eligible participants can attend and participate in the Games.
At the same time, the system indicates the areas that each individual participant is authorized to access and provides data that helps ATHOC determine the required size and capacity for facilities and services. The ACR also provides participants' data as appropriate to the other GMS applications, including transportation, sports entries and athlete qualification, medical encounters, VIP protocol management, arrivals and departures, accommodations, and staff/volunteer management.
In addition to IT capabilities provided by Schlumberger, the accreditation process includes security checks by law enforcements agencies, as well as immigration checks for non-Greek citizens since an Olympic Games accreditation is equivalent to granting a visa for the duration of the Games. The Schlumberger contract with the International Olympic Committee is the world's largest sports-related IT contract, covering four Olympic Games over eight years: Salt Lake City in 2002, Athens in 2004, Turin in 2006 and Beijing in 2008.
