United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted MIST Inc., which is NBS Card Technology Corp.'s parent company, U.S. patent # 6588673 for its technology invention, method and system to eliminate the duplication of hardware security module (HSM) and provide for seamless personalization directly from the cardholder data file.
The issuance of this patent covers the company's "inline EMV smart card personalization process" technology, otherwise known as "one step process".

Since April 2000, NBS evaluated the traditional solutions for EMV smart card personalization, searched for a cost effective, and space saving solution. The idea of utilizing the new technologies available, particularly for digital certificate and key generation, allowed the NBS software team to develop an entirely new and innovative method for EMV smart card issuance.

NBS "Inline" approach eliminates the duplication of HSM and provides for seamless personalization directly from the cardholder data file. This makes the need for a separate data preparation process for card personalization optional. It also allows for a one step personalization process for smart cards on large or small personalization systems saving card issuers, and service bureaus time, money, and space particularly on small volume production runs.

The NBS inline personalization process patent application for all international countries is pending, and expects to go through shortly.
