When talking about the banking market you would not expect Gemplus to crop up very soon, but 2003/04 might be different as the French smart card manufacturer has won contracts to deliver 40 million banking smart cards to the United Kingdom over the next 2 years. This goes in line with their aggressive strategy to be a significant player in the market.

I believe this is wonderful news for Gemplus who is answering critics by doing what it is good at. Just a few years ago Gemplus was not even seen as a player in the banking market. Now the company has surged its way to the number 3 position with a significant market share. This is something the likes of Oberthur Card Systems, Axalto and even Giesecke & Devrient need to worry about. This win will push Gemplus into the top tier of suppliers in the United Kingdom banking market.

In an announcement made earlier this month, Gemplus will provide one of the biggest debit card issuers in the UK, Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) - among other UK banks - with smart cards to replace the magnetic stripe system on the banks' debit cards.

EMV is one of the largest markets for EMV wityh about 115 million payment cards needed to be upgraded by January 2005. Whether this will happen in time is another question.

Speaking to Gilles Michel, Executive Vice President of Gemplus’ Financial & Security Services Business Unit a couple of months at the Gemplus Analyst Day he mentioned the Gemplus strategy and the importance banking was to Gemplus and how they intend to address the market. This is further evidence that this strategy is working. The aggressive attitude to capture market share is working. Its is too early to say Gemplus is back, but they it certainly looks a lot brighter than it did a year ago.

This win also shows banks around the world also looking to move to EMV that Gemplus can help. This is something that is going to play a big role for the future successes for Gemplus in the banking arena.

Gemplus has also announced further wins in Brazil and is also partnering with Toppan Printing Co to deliver multi applications cards to JCB in Japan. As an illustration of its worldwide presence, Gemplus supplied products and services to more than 460 financial institutions in over 67 countries in 2002. Most recently, Gemplus also signed contracts with leading banks of Eastern Europe, including Komercni Banka & eBanka in Czech Republic, PBZ bank in Croatia and K&H bank in Hungary.

It looks like 2003 is going to be a good year for Gemplus in the banking field.
