From March 2004, East Japan Railway Co (JR East) will launch an electronic cash service in which its smart card-based train ticket will act as a vehicle for cashless transactions at stations and local convenience stores

In November 2003, JR East piloted a similar service for its credit card holders, but the new Suica-based service does not have a credit card function, only an e-purse. Suica cash will be accepted at 196 convenience stores at 64 JR East stations, but by mid-year the rail entity aims to increase this total to 536 convenience stores at 206 stations on its network.
JR East’s objective is to facilitate the e-cash transactions at over 1,000 stores within a year, after having equipped its convenience store partner, NewDays, for cashless payments in the initial rollout next month. For some time, JR East has derived extra revenues from sales at station retailers, and believes the e-cash venture will improve this business. In other news, technology firm, Dai Nippon Printing Co, will in May offer a “wallet of the future”, a vehicle for e-money and tickets which leverages SIM cards to allow the device to be used with different e-money programs or over the Internet.

Over 60 million smart (integrated circuit, or IC) cards were issued in Japan last year, and to build on the increasing use of IC cards, Japanese carrier, NTT Corp, is launching an integrated card solution which may become a national standard for smart cards, according to AsiaBizTech. Banks and credit card firms, which are assessing the potential of IC cards for credit card and e-money applications, could use the Type B encryption technology on NTT’s card to secure data in transit, for example, while the FeliCa contactless chip could facilitate fast transit fare payments.
