| €54.7 million venture capital funding went to 9 European and Israeli companies during the past week
LONDON, 09 March 2004.- For the second week in a row, the biotechnology & healthcare sector received the majority of the total funding. €34.4 million (63 percent) were invested in 4 companies. A €25 million second round investment went to CareX, a French biotechnology company founded in 2001 and specializing in the development of treatments for metabolic diseases. This is the fourth largest investment recorded by Tornado Insider in 2004.
Four of the nine companies this week received either seed or first round funding. The medical device biotechnology company, Beta-O2, received €1.6 million seed capital from Vitalife and Heznek, and will shortly establish offices near Petach Tikva in Israel. The three companies receiving first round financing are Bionexis (France), AnaFocus (Spain) and Kalysis (Spain).
Kalysis gears up for international growth
This investment is to fund the company’s growth in product development and support international sales efforts. Diego Antona Archilla said, “We have opportunities for projects with both public and private organizations in the US and Mexico.”
The Spanish company provides various services that address the needs of secure Internet payment using smart cards. Kalysis offers a patented multiplatform technology that enables secure payment using a special reader that connects to a PC, PDA or mobile phone. As well as products and software, Kalysis also provides consulting services for organizations implementing authentication and digital signatures.
