SANTA CLARA, CA. and MEXICO CITY, MEXICO -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 07/11/2002 -- VeriFone Omni 3750 Reduces Fraud And Card Skimming At The Point Of Sale. Demonstrating commanding leadership in the electronic payment market, VeriFone, Inc. and BBVA Bancomer today announced the occurrence of Mexico’s first EMV transaction utilizing VeriFone’s newest terminal, the Omni 3750. The transaction was conducted at La Casa del Fumador in Mexico City. EMV will help Bancomer reduce fraud and, as smart cards replace magnetic stripe cards, will lead to the elimination of card skimming at the point of sale.

'VeriFone continues to be a market leader in the delivery of EMV-compliant solutions around the globe,” said Douglas Bergeron, CEO, VeriFone. “Banks and retailers turn to VeriFone as a trusted partner in providing reliable solutions that meet their needs today and provide a smart migration strategy for the future.”

BBVA Bancomer is leading Mexico in chip card issuance and acceptance. It is the first bank in Mexico to issue EMV cards. The solution is currently installed in approximately 10 retail locations, supporting both mag-stripe and chip credit card transactions.

“Bancomer is proud to be the solutions provider for Mexico’s first EMV transaction,” said Francisco Zago, new technologies director, BBVA Bancomer. “This truly demonstrates our commitment to drive chip card acceptance and reduce fraud for the payment industry.”

EMV, the only global, interoperable, smart card payment standard, paves the way for the elimination of card skimming as it is known today. Smart cards offer the best security available in the payment industry. EMV cards securely store card account data that thieves can too often steal from today’s magnetic stripe cards.

“These transactions represent the start of a journey that will ultimately improve card payment security not only in Mexico, but around the world,” said John Sheets, director of product security, VeriFone. “The combination of smart card technologies deployed in the Bancomer EMV cards and the VeriFone terminals provides best-in-class security.”

The Omni 3750, running the Verix multi-application architecture and VeriFone’s EMV software, has achieved EMVCo Level 1 and Level 2 Type Approval. It offers the fastest time-to-market for merchants wanting to implement a complete, powerful EMVCo-approved solution that supports multiple acquirers as well as value-added services including telco top-up and employee food vouchers.

VeriFone's Omni 3750 and has the speed and 32-bit processing power to easily handle the demanding cryptography and Dynamic Data Authentication requirements related to EMV compliance. In addition, the Verix multi-application architecture used by the Omni 3750 features application separation and file authentication to support multiple applications running securely on a single terminal and to prevent intrusion into the applications. And the terminal’s unique all-in-one design is easy to use and reduces countertop clutter.
