CHIPDRIVE Developer Pack FAQ
GENERAL

Q: What is the CHIPDRIVE Developer Pack?

A: The CHIPDRIVE Developer Pack enables developers to quickly and easily build a variety of smart card applications for both businesses and consumers.

Q: Can I use it to develop applications for the SCM readers?

A: The CHIPDRIVE Developer Pack does not support the SCM family of readers. To develop applications for these readers you will need to utilize the PC/SC interface.

Q: What does the CHIPDRIVE Developer Pack bring to the smart card industry?

A: Smart card applications are developed by professional developers who write extremely specialized applications in low-level languages. Instead of just a specialized group of programmers, many programmers already working with languages such as Visual Basic or C++ can now use existing development environments to write smart card applications.

Q: What does the Developer Pack include?

A: The API Kit comes with the neccessary tools you need to get started programming CHIPDRIVE terminals. Software samples written in Visual Basic, C++, and Delphi are included.

Q: What kind of applications can I develop?

A: You can develop applications that involve security, information storage, identification, record storage and numerous other applications.

Q: How hard is it to program an application?

A: It depends on your knowledge and experience in programming. Programming knowledge is required.

Q: Can I use traditional development environments such as Visual Studio to develop smart card applications?

A: Yes. The Developer Pack is designed to be used in conjunction with standard IDE's such as Microsoft Visual Studio.

Q: What terminals are intended to be used with the Developer Pack?

A: The Developer Pack allows you to develop applications for all CHIPDRIVE terminals.

Q: I'm having some trouble with the installation. Any suggestions?

A: Normally, installation of the Towitoko reader and drivers is very easy. But of course, variations in hardware and software on the target machine can cause different results. Some things to keep in mind:

  • Other applications accessing the COM port which may be running or un-installed improperly
  • Windows on the D:\ has been known to cause the reader to be undetectable
  • A mouse with a scrolling button plugged into the mouse splitter may interfere with the reader drivers.
  • Installing the split tail drivers when the mouse isn't attached to the split tail can cause the reader not to work

Q: Under which operating systems can I utilize the Developer Pack?

A: You can use the Developer Pack under Windows 3.x,95,98,NT,ME,2000, and XP.

    Q: What is a cardserver?

A: When an application which interfaces with a Towitoko reader is launched it must access the scard32.dll or scard16.dll. When this is called, a program(object) is loaded into memory, which manages sending data back and forth between the application, the reader, and the card, and allows for multiple applications accessing multiple card readers. So it is in essence, a "cardserver".
