 McLean, Virginia - July 19, 2004 - Lingo, the high-speed voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) phone service, now offers customers in 46 states and the District of Columbia the opportunity to transfer their existing telephone number to the broadband telephone service.
Launched last month by Primus Telecommunications, Inc., Lingo (www.lingo.com) is now the only VOIP service provided by a major U.S. communications carrier to provide such broad geographic coverage, coast-to-coast
For consumers and small businesses with high-speed Internet access, Lingo is the most economical broadband telephone service on the market today. Lingo customers can make unlimited calls anywhere in the U.S., to Canada, and even to Western Europe, for the unmatched rate of $19.95 a month. Primus also offers the service free for the first 3-months to encourage users to try an alternative to their conventional telephone company, at savings of up to 80 percent.
The company said that Lingo customers who want to add a second telephone number to their Primus-provided analog telephone adapter (ATA) can select from a wide range of area codes and numbers now available. The ATA is a small device that fits between the broadband connection and an ordinary phone.
"Lingo's ability to accommodate customers with numbers across the United States exemplifies the boundless nature of the Internet, and offers our customers a chance to leverage the power of their broadband connection and an ordinary phone to make and receive calls effortlessly, without limits, across the street, throughout North America, and worldwide, with a proven telecom company," said John Melick, co-president of Primus's U.S. operations.
Remarking on the growing number of customers who are signing up for Lingo as a replacement for their more costly traditional phone service, Melick said that, "Besides the savings, even more compelling for many Lingo customers is the access to a group of features not typically offered by the traditional telephone company -- like voicemail to e-mail delivery, call forwarding, and distinctive ring tones. Customers like the easy Web-based portal we provide which allows them to tailor these features to their lifestyle, and they love the fact that they do not pay additional charges and fees for these features. "
