World Smart Card IC Market Study

FROST & SULLIVAN RESEARCH REPORT
Research Overview Demand for High-memory SIM Cards Rapidly Increasing
The rapid adoption of global system for mobile communications (GSM) technology worldwide is creating strong demand for high-memory 64k and 128k SIM cards. As telecom operators strive to provide value-added services, they are pushing for higher-memory SIM cards. In addition, the arrival of 3G is also boosting high-end smart card IC chip sales since 3G and 2.5G services require larger memory capacity to store new features and bigger files.
This Frost & Sullivan research service analyzes the global markets for smart card ICs. The study offers key market drivers and restraints, in-depth market analysis, competitive analysis, and strategies employed by participants in the memory and microcontroller smart card IC market. It covers detailed market shares across geographic regions including Americas, Europe Middle East Africa (EMEA), and Asia Pacific.
Government Projects Create Opportunities
Government interest in ID security applications post 9/11 brings large potential into the smart card IC market. The launch of high volume national ID projects such as the China national ID project also creates enormous opportunities for the industry. "Using smart cards not only provides easy identification and decrease in fraud, but also benefits governments through integration of multiple applications such as retirement benefits, e-purse, phone cards, and so on," says the analyst of the research.
In addition, the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) recommended combination of contactless smart cards and face recognition biometrics for new secure biometric-enabled passports and travel documents is also a critical driver. Since United States’ law mandates that the 27 countries under the Visa Waiver Program follow ICAO recommendations to improve security, the contactless smart card market is likely to receive a tremendous boost as countries worldwide start issuing passports with contactless chips.
Expanding Applications Promise Stronger Markets
Growth in GSM, banking, government, and ID markets are expected to continue pushing growth in the smart card IC market. GSM penetration of less saturated markets in Asia and the Americas, and various secure ID projects across the world, increasing demand for Java cards, and migration to Europay/MasterCard/Visa (EMV) standard in the banking sector will create substantial opportunities for smart card ICs. The use of contactless technology by retailers and in various transit projects worldwide promises high uptake of smart cards. Transactions that require speed and convenience for the user, and faster throughput and increased revenues for retailers are likely to be targeted by contactless technology.
