 Jürgen Nehls to retire from executive directorship after long-standing successful service. Member of the Board of Directors of Munich-based security and technology group Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) for over 17 years, is retiring from his position as of December 31, 2002. Now in his 65th year, Nehls was responsible for smart card and card system business in the payment and industry/government divisions at G&D.
Forward-looking and receptive to new technologies, Nehls played a major role in the company's transition from a banknote and securities printer to a high-technology organization. His greatest achievement was the successful development of microprocessor cards as a new business area, and the expansion of the company into a globally operating group this entailed. His vision of greater security for worldwide payment systems is now becoming reality as chip cards are introduced in more and more countries.
Nehls, who has excellent national and international connections in the banking sector and public institutions, will continue to make his services available to the Giesecke & Devrient Group over the coming years, performing important tasks. These chiefly include cultivating relationships with highest-level contacts in the German banking community and with key international customers, notably in the Asian region.
Chairman of the G&D Board Will Berchtold commented: "Shareholders, Supervisory Board and Board of Directors of Giesecke & Devrient are deeply grateful to Jürgen Nehls for his outstanding services to the company. We are fortunate we will still be able to profit from his experience and contacts." Business partners, colleagues in senior management and employees value especially Jürgen Nehls' business acumen and vision, but also his exceptional fairness, open-mindedness and integrity.
Nehls has received many distinctions and awards for his exemplary work on behalf of a wide range of charitable and public foundations. Among his decorations are the Bavarian Order of Merit, the German Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and the Grand Medal of Honor of the Republic of Austria. He is on the boards of the German Sport Aid Foundation and the Bavarian Council of Universities, and deputy chairman of the German Near and Middle East Association, to name only a few of his commitments.
Restructuring of card business
The transfer of executive responsibility for G&D's card business on January 1, 2003 is to be accompanied by restructuring measures. The new structure will be product and market oriented and is aimed at strengthening G&D's international presence, increasing market share, improving competitiveness and cutting costs.
Under G&D Board member Franz Haniel (47), previously responsible for card business in the telecommunications sector, global sales and product responsibility for telecommunications, payment and industry/government as well as identification systems are to be combined in the "Products and Markets" unit.
Global solutions business, production, purchasing and logistics are being brought together in the newly formed "Operations" unit, to be headed by Peter Eisenbacher (43). The Supervisory Board has appointed Eisenbacher to the G&D Board of Directors as of January 1, 2003. For the past nine months, the business studies graduate has managed the development of solutions business in the card segment at G&D on an interim basis. Eisenbacher spent 15 years at IBM, where his final position was that of Vice President for Technical Field Services covering Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Eastern Europe. Before joining G&D Eisenbacher chaired the management board of TDS AG, a company quoted on the German "New Market" stock exchange.
